Australian wicketkeeper Alex Carey has expressed confidence in paceman Mitchell Starc’s fitness ahead of the fifth and final Test against India, set to begin in Sydney on Friday. Despite concerns about Starc’s condition following an injury scare, Carey is optimistic the veteran bowler will rise to the occasion.

Injury Concerns for Starc

Starc underwent scans after experiencing discomfort in his ribs and side during Australia’s thrilling 184-run victory in the fourth Test in Melbourne, which secured a 2-1 series lead for Pat Cummins’ team. Carey, however, brushed aside worries about the 34-year-old’s fitness.

“He’ll be fine; he’ll push through,” Carey said. “I’ve played with Starcy for a long time, and he’s one of the toughest cricketers I’ve ever encountered. He may grimace and clutch his ribs, but he’ll be ready for the contest.”

Starc’s Impact in Melbourne

Although Starc claimed just one wicket in Melbourne, the dismissal of Indian stalwart Virat Kohli during the second innings was pivotal. Carey lauded Starc’s determination and skill, particularly during his opening spell on the final day.

“That first spell without a reward was some of the best bowling I’ve seen from him this series,” Carey remarked. “His performance has improved throughout the series, and he’ll be eager to contribute in the final Test.”

Australia’s Approach to the Final Test

With a 2-1 lead, Australia only needs a draw in Sydney to clinch the series and retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. However, Carey emphasized the team’s focus on securing an outright victory.

“It’s great to be in this position, but we’re keen to finish the series with a win,” Carey said. “We approach every game with the intention of winning, and this one is no different. We want to put our best foot forward from day one and see where it takes us.”

As the decisive Test approaches, all eyes will be on Starc to see if he can overcome his physical challenges and deliver another memorable performance to help Australia seal the series in style.
