In a significant lead-up to their upcoming match against Germany, Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman expressed his disappointment over the red card issued to captain Virgil van Dijk during the recent Nations League draw with Hungary. The team will be without their key defender, but Koeman has decided not to call up a replacement.

Van Dijk received two yellow cards in quick succession late in the second half of the match, the first for dissent and the second for a clear foul. Koeman found the circumstances surrounding the first yellow particularly perplexing, as Van Dijk was protesting a foul against teammate Donyell Malen, who had been brought down while advancing toward goal with the Netherlands trailing 1-0.

“That moment was frustrating,” Koeman remarked. “I don’t understand it. We’ve always agreed that a captain can express his views to the referee.”

Koeman also noted that the foul on Malen warranted a red card for the opposing player, indicating that there was no intent to play the ball. He acknowledged the impact of Van Dijk’s second yellow card, stating, “He knows that himself; it was not convenient for us.”

With Van Dijk out, Koeman confirmed that he will keep the current squad intact for the upcoming fixture against Germany, who lead Nations League Group A3 with seven points, two ahead of the Netherlands. This match presents a crucial opportunity for the Dutch team to either take the lead in the group or fall significantly behind with only two games left to play.

Reflecting on the draw against Hungary, Koeman felt a sense of satisfaction despite the challenges faced. His team managed to equalize late in the match thanks to a goal from Denzel Dumfries, which followed Van Dijk’s dismissal. “We didn’t surrender; we played aggressively and found the equalizer,” he said. “Though Hungary created some dangerous opportunities, we defended well and left with a reasonable feeling.”

As the Netherlands prepares for this critical match against Germany, all eyes will be on how the team adapts in the absence of their captain and aims to secure a vital victory in the Nations League.
